Hemisferium - Philip the 2nd Sundial Miniature- H91
This vertical clock from the end of the 16th century is a very particular piece: on one side it has an effigy of King Philip II of Spain and on the other side the sundial. The original piece, made in bronze, is in the British Museum in London.
Between the 16th and 17th centuries there was a close bond between Spain and the Netherlands, marked by mutual influence and a high level of cooperation between their scientists. To strengthen the Spanish empire, Philip II did not hesitate to sponsor various studies in astronomy, cartography and nautical astronomy at the renowned University of Louvain (Brussels, Flanders), and some of the most precise and beautiful scientific instruments were born there.
